In the New Testament of the Bible, John the Baptist said, “Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance” (Matt 3:8, Luke 3:8; NKJV). Repentance is to change our mind from the carnal, evil worldly life and commit to lead the Godkind of life. This is a step we all have to make as we ask Jesus into our life to be our Lord and Saviour, and to have control of our lives (Rom 10:9,10). The apostle Paul teaches us that we should, “repent, turn to God and do works befitting repentance” (Acts 26:20; NKJV). In other words, our lives should be different, they should reflect Jesus. There should be outward evidence of an inward change (Luke 6:45). When people asked John the Baptist what fruits they should show in their repentant lives he listed being a blessing to others who needed clothing and food, he also talked about integrity, fairness and mercy (Luke 3:10-14). Paul encourages us to do good to everyone, especially those in our church (Gal 6:10). The apostle John exhorted us to bear good fruit (John 15:16) and this should surely be reflected in our words (Matt 12:34b). If we allow, the Holy Spirit will develop good fruit in our lives, “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22-23; NKJV), transforming us into the likeness of Jesus (2 Cor 3:18). People should see Jesus in us as we go about as His ambassadors (2 Cor 5:20) sharing Him with others and seeing the fruit of people coming into God’s kingdom, the church (Mark 16:15-17)!
